Coronation & Scholarship Ball
The Coronation and Scholarship Ball was established in 1895 to recognize individuals in the region for their civic endeavors. This annual event finds its roots in the magical kingdom of Quivira ruled currently by Queen Mary Catherine Landen and King Deryl F. Hamann. Their reign will continue until October 13, 2012 when the 116th King and Queen will be announced as part of the Coronation and Scholarship Ball production. Thanks to the generousity of Cox Communications, the 2011 Coronation will be available for viewing through Cox "On Demand" beginning October 26, 2011.
Also recognized during this event are outstanding leaders from around the Heartland. Princesses, Escorts, and Pages represent their families who are being honored for their contributions to the region. The Court of Honor Recognition Award is also distributed at the Ball. Recipients from throughout the region are recognized for one of the following eight categories: agriculture, arts, business and industry, education, philanthropy, professions, public service, and sports.
The annual Coronation and Scholarship Ball raises money for the Ak-Sar-Ben Scholarship Fund. Ak-Sar-Ben partners with the Horatio Alger Scholarship Program to provide 50 scholarships to deserving students from Nebraska and Western Iowa.
All aspects of the event are directed by volunteers who serve on the either the Ak-Sar-Ben Coronation Ball Committee or the Women's Ball Committee. The current members are as follows:
