Ak-Sar-Ben Boasts More Than a Century of Impact

Ak-Sar-Ben was formed in 1895 and has been an important contributor to the Heartland since. The following is a brief timeline of memorable moments for the organization. 1895 Twelve men went down to Mardi Gras to bring back the floats and save the State Fair from moving. 
Total membership was 554 business leaders who paid $10.
Meetings were held at Old Fellows Hall, 14 & Dodge.
First Parade titled "Feast of Mondamin" was held September 19, 1895.
   
1910 Total membership was 1,590.
   
1919 In its 25th year, total membership was 3,841.
200 acres at 63rd & Shirley was purchased to built a permanent community center. 
Ak-Sar-Ben's purpose was directed to agriculture - the economic backbone of the region.
   
1921 Racing was introduced on a 1-mile track.
Memberships were 4,280.
   
1927 The orginal Ak-Sar-Ben Den was destroyed by fire along with most of the organiations historical records.
   
1928 The Coliseum was dedicated on May 25, 1928. Adjoining barns were added as well.
The first Stock Show opened November 3, 1928. 
   
1929 Racing was banned in Nebraska. 
   
1935 Racing resumes.
   
1938 Ak-Sar-Ben purchases the Douglas Street Bridge for $2.3 million and promises to make it free to the public to 
typlify the bond of friendship between Nebaska and Iowa.
Ak-Sar-Ben installs an ice rink in the Coliseum.
   
1939  Races attendance reached 150,000.
First year of the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights Hockey Team.
   
1941 Women finally allowed to be members.
   
1942  US Army Transport set up on the Ak-Sar-Ben Grounds. No Hockey, Coronation or Races were held until 1945-1946. 
   
1944 Ak-Sar-Ben 50 Year Celebration held at Creighton. 
Good Neighbor Program was started.
   
1945 Races resumed; 4-H Beef Show temporarily moved to Omaha Stockyards.
   
1947 Ak-Sar-Ben Bridge paid off becoming the first free-toll bridge across the Missouri River in Nebraska.
First Ak-Sar-Ben Rodeo held.
   
1954 Electrical parades resume for one year.
Ak-Sar-Ben memberships topped 20,208.
   
1962    Ak-Sar-Ben Western Hall of Fame started.  
   
1966  Ak-Sar-Ben renovates the Coliseum and Barns covering the brick with metal and undating the interior at a cost of $2 million. 
   
1967 The Ak-Sar-Ben property was annexed into the City of Omaha. 
"The Ak-Sar-Ben Story" was released in April. 
   
1970  Membership dues increased to $12. Total membership was 53,622.
   
1972  Ak-Sar-Ben provides more than 500 scholarships annually.
   
1973  Ak-Sar-Ben announces offer to buy Orpheum Theatre and donate to the City as a Center for Performing Arts.
   
1976  Ak-Sar-Ben contributed $1,205,004 to 62 programs across the region. 
   
1979 Ak-Sar-Ben donates $300,000 to Schramm State Park Aquarium and $250,000 to the Henry Doorly Zoo Courtyard and Cat Complex.
Two Russian - U.S. Hockey Games are played at Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum.
   
1982 All-time record in memberships - 71,635.
   
1985 Ak-Sar-Ben's 50th year of racing.
   
1986 Ak-Sar-Ben racing monopoly becomes a thing of the past with dog track in Iowa and other tracks in Minnestoa and Missouri.
   
1988 Ak-Sar-Ben Coronation returns as a fund-raising event for the Ak-Sar-Ben Scholarships
   
1992 Ak-Sar-Ben transfers the racetrack to Douglas County and gifts away $17 million in property assets to the community.
   
1996 Last season of racing on the Ak-Sar-Ben Grounds.
Ak-Sar-Ben restructures.
   
1998 Ak-Sar-Ben supports development of Qwest Center.
   
2002 Last year of Ak-Sar-Ben events on the Ak-Sar-Ben property.
Ak-Sar-Ben property redeveloped.
   
2003 Ak-Sar-Ben events moved to Qwest Center.
Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Playoffs, televised on CBS, moves to Omaha.
   
2005 Ak-Sar-Ben partners with Horatio Alger to provide $250,000 in need-based scholarships annually.
   
2008 Ak-Sar-Ben supports the Ak-Sar-Ben Park Project.
   
2010 Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H Stock Show adds North Dakota as an eligible state to compete.
